Bunny ear cactus (Opuntia microdasys)
Opuntia microdasys, commonly known as Bunny Ear Cactus, is a distinctive and popular prickly pear cactus native to Mexico. It earned its name due to the characteristic flat pads (cladodes) resembling bunny ears, adorned with small, white or yellow glochids (tiny spines) that resemble polka dots.
This cactus has low water requirements. Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. Bunny Ear Cactus thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It is highly drought-resistant and is well-suited for arid and desert landscapes.
Maintain warm temperatures, as this cactus prefers a warm environment. It can tolerate relatively low humidity levels, making it suitable for various climates. Plant it in a well-draining cactus or succulent mix to prevent water stagnation and root rot.
During the growing season (spring and summer), you can fertilize the Bunny Ear Cactus sparingly with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer. However, avoid over-fertilizing, as cacti generally have modest nutritional needs.
Please note that while Opuntia microdasys is generally non-toxic, it has spines that can cause skin irritation. Handle it with care and keep it out of reach of children and pets. Bunny Ear Cactus is a resilient and visually appealing addition to xeriscapes, succulent gardens, and indoor cactus collections.
